German used vehicles prime rankings

Stuttgart (dpa) – From compact vehicles to transporters, you can’t really go wrong with a German used car, according to one new report.

The 2018 Used Car Report published by vehicle testing organization Dekra provides data on used cars in nine classes, with German models near the top of the rankings across the board.

For the third year running, the overall winner is the Audi A6, followed by the Mercedes M-Class and B-Class in second and third.

Models produced by Audi had the fewest problems in the compact, middle and upper classes, as well as the sports car segments. Dekra found the most reliable transporter to be the Mercedes Sprinter, while the VW Amarok was the top van.

Reliable, good-value used models also come from Opel, Porsche, BMW, Honda, Mazda, Citroen, Renault, Volvo, Skoda and Ford.

The report includes 522 models, and takes into account problems recorded in around 15 million scheduled vehicle inspections over a span of two years.

The winner in each vehicle class was deemed to be the model with the fewest defects reported among cars with mileage of up to 150,000 kilometres.

“In terms of susceptibility to defects, in our view, mileage is a much more significant factor than the age of the vehicle,” explains Jann Fehlauer from Dekra.

The used car report also contains separate information on vintage cars, newer used cars produced since 2015, and cars with mileage of between 150,001 and 200,000 km.

Dekra also only included models of which at least 1,000 had been inspected. Problems classed as being the responsibility of the vehicle owner, such as low tyre tread or worn-out windscreen wipers, were not included.
